We found out that the librarian went to Puerto Rico! She was hoping to see the Puertorican tarantulas, but didn't get to see any. We heard her tell others that her best time was when she went to the recently-opened public library in the island of Culebra. She was impressed and hopes to retire and work there some day.

Thanks for your comment, Eric. It reminds us that we need to correct the initial information on the blog, since now we are three spiders writing what we see.

The three of us eat live crickets of different sizes. Shirley, the baby in the library, eats pin-sized crickets while Sophie and I (Krista) eat middle-sized crickets. Even the librarian eats crickets! Just recently, a friendly teacher brought her a cricket covered in chocolate which she ate in front of amazed second-graders. We eat about a cricket a week, sometimes more, sometimes less.

And regarding your last question: Never! We haven't ever bit another human! Humans in the library treat us well and love us, we would never hurt them. Plus, tarantulas don't bite people - that's just Hollywood fiction.

I was looking over the web - and i found your site.
I love the idea of you two spiders writing about what you see.
What do you eat?
How often do you feed?
Do you ever bite people?

Peace

I interviewed Margaret Read Macdonald for an hour on my podcast the Art of Storytelling with Children. She spoke about working as an English speaking storyteller in countries where she had to use a translator to tell stories. She also spoke about her work collecting stories over seas and how she goes about getting permission to use stories like the book you discussed.

Here is the link to her interview if you want to take a listen.

As a librarian, I love the fact that you are doing more than a cursory job of involving the students in reading the books. This could lead into other curricular areas such as science, etc.

Krista,

Did you notice how each group of students responded differently to this same story? You are very fortunate to live in the library and hear so many stories every week. I can't wait to hear what Miss Mayra will read on Monday and Tuesday.

Your friend,

Interesting blog post, though I think the title is a little misleading. Nevertheless, the incidents described do provide food for thought.
